Investing.com – Boris Johnson extended his lead in the race to replace Theresa May in the Tory party leadership contest on Wednesday. Outsider Rory Stewart was eliminated from the race.

Johnson may have picked up votes from the Brexiteer faction of the party following Dominic Raab’s elimination on Tuesday evening. Former Brexit Secretary Raab was viewed as the most pro-Brexit candidate.

Former Foreign Minister Johnson gained 143 votes from 313 of his Conservative Party colleagues, an increase on the 126 votes he received in the second ballot on Tuesday evening.

With the smallest share of the vote, Rory Stewart was the latest candidate to be eliminated from the race. The International Development Secretary lost 10 votes from the previous evening's ballot and secured just 27 votes on Wednesday evening's round of voting.

The third ballot eliminates those with fewer than 33 votes, or the candidate with the lowest number of votes in the case that all candidates receive more than 33.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt remained in second position with 54 votes, an increase on the 46 votes received on Tuesday evening. Environment Minister Michael Gove picked up 51 votes to remain in third place, while Home Secretary Sajid Javid scooped up 38 votes.

Conservative Members of Parliament will continue voting over the coming days to whittle down the number of candidates to just two.

Once selected, members of the Conservative party up and down the country will vote between the final two candidates, with the winner then being chosen to take over from May as the next U.K. prime minister. The final result is expected in the week of the 22 July.
